Banana Moon
Screenplay: Animated Musical OR BROADWAY MUSICAL
by Nanette Fenton
Synopsis
Located off the East coast of Africa, Banana Island is home to a thriving village of brown monkeys who all live in peace and harmony with each other, as long as they don’t have to associate with the one “freak” who they consider an outcaste: SUKARI, an orphaned teenage blue-eyed albino monkey who collects their trash and junk and takes it to his secret cave across the bridge that spans the crocodile infested river.
Visually different from the other monkeys, the villagers consider Sukari a possible threat, someone not worth getting to know, despite Sukari’s many kind-hearted attempts to fit in and be a part of village life. One of his dreams is to be a part of the Abadabba Band to sing and play his guitar.
The strong theme of this comedy/drama adventure is “It’s not what’s on the outside that counts, but what’s on the inside.” It is a theme that resonates, not only through quick-paced dialogue and hilarious events, but through the music and lyrics that reach into the hearts and minds of children, teens and adults with many positive messages.
Synopsis CONTINUATION
Sukari’s adventures in overcoming his low self-esteem, struggling with his identity, and the prejudice of the village’s brown monkeys, are filled with friend and foe alike.
Snafoo, a tree snake, is his friend and faithful companion, who changes color depending on his emotions, is always at his side giving advice and unconditional love.
Crockpot, the island’s most feared nemesis, a villainous crocodile who killed Sukari’s parents many years ago, has been obsessed with devising a plot to eat him ever since, conspiring with the three village bullies (Kava, Kofi, & Kong) to make it happen!
Baba Bwana, the elderly sear/sage who lives at the Crystal Waterfall on Banana Island, teaches Sukari what the magic of life is all about by using crystals as a symbol of the “magic that is inside of us,” to be used and treasured in our life.
The Enchanted Kalamus are the most beautiful multi-colored plumed birds in Africa; their voices are as beautiful as their feathers. Screaming Mimi is an old, ugly molting buzzard who thinks she’s just as beautiful.
The Abadaba Band (Kiko, Uzi, Tambor, and Tamu) learn through their encounters with Sukari, that music is the food of the soul, and there can only be peace, harmony and understanding when everyone works individually and together for the ‘higher good of all’ with one heart, one drum, one beat.
The Buffalo Boys are zebra-riding cowboys who herd the water buffalo safely across the dangerous river to the sweet grasses on the mainland. They are the macho monkeys all the females adore; several of them part of the Abadaba Band. They learn a lesson on the true meaning of bravery and heroism from Sukari.
Mowna, the owner of the island Beauty Tree, who thinks that beauty is only visual, created on the outside, learns what love is all about from Sukari, and her ugly buzzard friend (Screaming Mimi), that one’s true beauty is on the inside!
